Full and final settlement, and why it is usually late
The closing calculation when someone leaves — where the delay is almost never the arithmetic, and almost always the clearance.
What it is
Unpaid salary, leave encashment, gratuity if eligible, reimbursements and bonus, less notice shortfall, advances and recoveries.
What gates it
Clearance from every department holding company property or dues.
The trap
Treating clearance as chasing rather than as a tracked process with owners and dates.
Full and final settlement is the closing calculation when someone leaves: unpaid salary, leave encashment, gratuity if eligible, reimbursements and bonus, minus notice shortfall, advances, and any recovery. It is settled after clearance from the departments holding company property or dues.
How it works in practice
A resignation on the 12th with 20 days of leave balance and a notice shortfall of 10 days produces four separate calculations that must agree with each other.
What to watch for
Most delays are clearance delays, not calculation delays. Track clearance as a process, not as chasing.
How Klok handles it
Klok runs exit as a case — notice arithmetic, clearance, F&F and letters — so the last payslip is right the first time.
Full and final settlement (F&F) FAQs
How long should F&F take?
Many employers commit to 30 to 45 days from the last working day. Whatever you commit to, the constraint is clearance turnaround, so that is what to measure.
Can we withhold settlement until assets are returned?
You can generally recover the value of unreturned assets against the settlement where the contract provides for it. Withholding the entire settlement indefinitely is a much weaker position, and a common source of complaints.
Is gratuity part of F&F?
Where the employee is eligible, yes — but it has its own statutory payment timeline, so it should not be allowed to hold up the rest of the settlement.
How quickly must a full-and-final be settled?
Wage payment timelines apply to final dues, and letting settlement drift for months is a common practice that does not have the legal comfort employers assume.
Can we hold F&F until assets are returned?
Recovery for unreturned assets needs to be an authorised, itemised deduction — not an open-ended hold on the whole settlement. Itemise it and pay the rest.
Should gratuity wait for the F&F?
Gratuity carries its own statutory timeline from when it becomes payable and should not be parked behind the rest of the settlement.
